“San girolamo in meditazione” – Master copy – Painting

For my first pastel study, I have chosen to replicate Saint Jerome in Meditation by my favourite and most inspiring painter, Caravaggio.
I have always admired the dignity and humility transpiring from the Saint’s face, so telling despite the shadows covering his expression and body, doubled down by time and an ascetical lifestyle.
Studying and replicating this painting during the course of weeks led me to discover it anew.
Analyzing Caravaggio’s ability to suggest depth not only in the brighter sections, but also in the way the light reflects in the shaded areas, expecially on the left elbow and along the back’s profile, left me in an absolute awe for his talent and craftsmanship.
